Day of Design: 20 Years of Newspaper Design

O Dia

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

O Dia (The Day) is a newspaper published daily in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The newspaper was founded on June 5, 1951 by Chagas Freitas, future governor of Rio de Janeiro. In 1983 , O Dia was purchased by entrepreneur and journalist Ary Carvalho.

Initially a vehicle for strong popular appeal, the newspaper underwent a major renovation in the early 1990s, with the intention of competing for readers with the more traditional Jornal do Brazil and O Globo. With the death of Ary Carvalho in 2003 , the company’s property was divided among his three daughters: Ariane , Gigi and Eliane de Carvalho. In 2005, Ariane left the company to found the newspaper Q!, bringing together the radio MPB FM .
