Day of Design: 20 Years of Newspaper Design

The Times

London, United Kingdom

The Times is a British daily national newspaper, first published in London in 1785 under the title The Daily Universal Register. It became The Times on January 1, 1788. The Times and its sister paper The Sunday Times are published by Times Newspapers. The Times and The Sunday Times were founded independently and have only had common ownership since 1967.

Though traditionally a moderate newspaper and sometimes a supporter of the Conservatives, The Times supported the Labour Party in the 2001 and 2005 general elections. In 2004, according to MORI, the voting intentions of its readership were 40 percent for the Conservative Party, 29 percent for the Liberal Democrats, and 26 percent for Labour. An American edition of The Times has been published since June 6, 2006.
